How Makovicka Physical Therapy Helps Prevent Sports Injuries in Young Athletes

Request An Appointment

The Makovicka Promise

The Makovicka Promise is to improve lives with exceptional care,
compassion, integrity, and by treating every patient like family.

Sports injuries for children are a real thing! With school back in session, that means the fields, courts, and tracks are buzzing with fall sports. Whether your child plays soccer, football, volleyball, runs cross country, or competes in another sport, one thing is true: keeping them safe and injury-free should be a top priority.

More Than Care: Makovicka’s Commitment to Young Athletes and Community

At Makovicka Physical Therapy, we’re more than just a place to go when your child gets hurt. We’re part of your community—supporting schools, attending games, and working directly with young athletes, coaches, and parents near our clinics. We take pride in knowing our patients and their families by name. Your child isn’t just an appointment on our schedule—they’re part of the same neighborhoods, schools, and teams we cheer for every week.

The good news? Most youth sports injuries can be prevented. And with our close ties to local schools, we’re in the perfect position to guide athletes, parents, and coaches on how to prepare for a safe and successful season.

Start with Smart Conditioning

Conditioning is the foundation of injury prevention. Young athletes should begin training 4–6 weeks before the first official practice to give their bodies time to adapt. Makovicka therapists provide injury-prevention information and, in some cases, workshops, for school teams and coaches—teaching them how to build strength, flexibility, and endurance in a safe way.

Begin with the basics: jogging, jumping jacks, and bodyweight squats. Then add sport-specific drills gradually. For example, a soccer player might start with light ball work, while a runner begins with short, easy distances. The keyword is gradually—pushing too hard, too fast is one of the quickest ways to end up sidelined with sports injuries.

The Power of a Proper Warm-Up

Athlete-Stretching - warm up to prevent sports injuriesA good warm-up is like starting your car on a cold morning—it gets everything moving smoothly. Spend 10–15 minutes on light cardio and dynamic stretches such as leg swings, arm circles, and walking lunges.

Makovicka Physical Therapy experts can also provide warm-up exercises for the team, making them fun, sport-specific, and easy for coaches and athletes to use daily.

Recovery is Not Optional When It Comes To Sports Injuries

Here’s something many parents overlook: rest is part of training. Muscles repair, grow, and get stronger during recovery—not while they’re being pushed to the limit. Young athletes need at least one full rest day a week and 8–9 hours of sleep each night. Watch for warning signs like unusual fatigue, frequent illness, or ongoing aches and pains – being aware of these will help prevent sports injuries.

Fuel the Machine

Good nutrition is just as important as good training. Encourage regular meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Hydration is key; water should be the main drink of choice, with sports drinks reserved for workouts or games lasting longer than an hour.

Listen to Their Body

The old saying “no pain, no gain” does not apply to young athletes when it comes to attempting to prevent sports injuries. While mild soreness after a tough workout can be normal, sharp or persistent pain is not. We teach athletes in our partner schools to understand the difference—and to speak up before a small issue becomes a major injury.

When to See a Professional

If pain lasts more than a few days, limits daily activity, or keeps your son or daughter from performing their best, it’s time to call a physical therapist. At Makovicka Physical Therapy, we specialize in early intervention—helping athletes recover faster so they can return to the sport they love.

We don’t just treat the injury—we follow up, check in with coaches, and keep communication open so your child’s care is truly a team effort.

Sports Injuries
